Peaceful nuclear program, Iran’s democratic right: Pak. Politician

Islamabad, Dec 8, IRNA -- A senior Pakistani political leader here Monday said it is democratic right of Iran to develop nuclear energy for peaceful means and pressure on Iran’s nuclear program is not justified.

Talking to IRNA, Noor Alam Khan MNA of Pakistan Peoples Party said that Iran is building a peaceful nuclear program and for that purpose it has been enriching uranium.

“I strongly condemn the western pressure on Iran’s nuclear program”, he said.

Iran being the signatory of nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, however, the US and the west have been suspecting Iran’s nuclear program saying that Iran is trying to build atomic bombs, an accusation which Iran has always strongly denied.

The western powers, especially the US, have been pressurizing Iran to roll back its nuclear program, although, Iran being a member of NPT, has always refused to do so.

Noor Alam Khan was of the view that Iran is handling the issue of its nuclear programme very tactfully.

“Iran is a responsible country and I am confident that it would not engage itself in any activity that could affect the world peace”, he believed.

Noor Alam Khan was of the view that west should not be afraid of Iran peaceful nuclear program.

He added that every country has a right to use nuclear energy for peaceful means. “Iran is an independent state and should develop nuclear energy”, he added.

“Being a Pakistan I would like to see Iran as a nuclear power”, said Noor Alam Khan.

Commenting on Iran-Pakistan relations he said relations of both the countries are based on historical foundations and they both have been enjoying friendly relations for so many years. “We would like to see Iran as a stable nation”, he added.

The political leader said that Iran and Pakistan have always supported each other in difficult times.

"The strong bilateral relations between both the countries are vital for the stability in the region", he opined.

He asked the leadership of both the countries to take more concrete steps to strengthen Pakistan-Iran relations in economic and trade fields.

Iran has faced three sets of UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment activities but Iran, a leading OPEC oil producer, denies it is seeking nuclear weapons and says it aims to provide energy for its growing population when its reserves of fossil fuels run out. /end
