CONFERENCE ON KYOTO PROTOCOL MEASURES TO OPEN IN MOSCOW
MOSCOW, June 4 (Itar-Tass) -- International conference titled 'Russia and the Carbon Market' opens in Moscow Wednesday at the initiative of the upper house of Russian parliament and the National Organization for Support to Carbon Absorption Projects.
The program of the conference was drafted by the upper house'scommittee for natural resources and nature conservation, as well as the committee for federation affairs and regional policies.
The Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which Russia ratified in 2004, "puts upon us specific obligations in terms of reducing the manmade emission of greenhouse gases," Vassily Duma, a deputy chairman of the committee for natural resources told Itar-Tass.
He called attention to the fact that the energy sector accounts for more than 70% of such emissions, and that is why he believes it isimportant to take urgent steps towards improving the efficient utilization of energy and to commission low-carbon technologies that alleviate the burden on the climate.
Projects in that field will be discussed at the Moscow conference, too.
Duma quoted the opinion of many Russian experts that the upgrading of efficiency is one of the most economically lucrative methods of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions.
"This means the Kyoto protocol gives us an additional stimulus for raising the efficiency of our own economy and for introducing newenergy-saving technologies in the industries," Duma said.
