Army chief visits Narathiwat before Malaysian PM's visit

NARATHIWAT, Dec 6 (TNA) - Army chief Gen. Anupong Paochinda is in Narathiwat meeting security agency officials in the southern border province in preparation for a visit by the Thai and Malaysian premiers on Wednesday.

Gen. Anupong met Narathiwat Governor Thanon Wetkornkan, Fourth Army Region Commander Lt-Gen. Phichet Visaijorn at city hall to direct security officials on the task of providing security for Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife on December 9.

The Thai prime minister and his Malaysian counterpart are scheduled to visit a school and to observe a government-supported project to boost the sufficiency economy in a village.

Gen. Anupong also visited a bridge connecting Thailand and Malaysia in Waeng district and met local officials there. The two premiers will also visit the bridge crossing the Kolok River to sign a pact to change the bridge's name to Friendship Bridge.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will officially visit Thailand for two days. He is due to meet his Thai counterpart in Bangkok and both leaders will travel to the Thai-Malaysian border province of Narathiwat in the restive South. (TNA)
