KAZAKHSTANI SAPPERS 80 YRS OLD ARTILLERY SHELL FROM PUBLIC BUILDING
ALMATY, June 4 (Itar-Tass) - Sappers have removed an artillery shelldating to the times of the Russian Civil War /1918 through 1921/ from the building of a local philharmonic society in Kazakhstan's northwest city of Uralsk, the Kazakhstani Ministry for Emergency Situations said Wednesday.
The rusted shell that stuck in the building's outer brick wall between the second and third floors turned into a self-styled sight in Uralsk, which was the scene of bloody combat actions during the Civil War.
It was not until May 3 this year, when the perforation works were done at the outer wall, that the real risks posed by the shell became clear.
The explosive device had a diameter of 76 millimeters and the length of 30 centimeters and it even had a fuse.
It was destroyed through demolition in a local open-strip mine, the ministry said
