SA tuna workers to get govt support

South Australian tuna workers affected by the industry's reduced catch allocation
will have access to federal government employment and training support.
The Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna recently reduced
Australia's allowable catch of the endangered species by 25 per cent over the next
two years.
Employment Participation Minister Mark Arbib and Fisheries Minister Tony Burke on
Saturday announced Port Lincoln tuna workers would have immediate access to
employment services so they can look for a new job, get financial support, and seek
advice about managing redundancy payments.
Labor is also providing funding for 150 nationally recognised training places, with
the Eyre Regional Development Board to help affected workers choose qualifications
that will lead to employment or further training.
"Support for tuna fishers in Port Lincoln is essential to ensure the sustainability
of the community and the industry," Mr Burke said in a statement.
