Adam Scott takes lead at Australian Open
The Adam Scott that golf fans in Australia have longed to see first-hand appears to
have finally arrived, with the Queenslander taking the outright lead during the
third round of the Australian Open.
The winner of 14 tournaments worldwide, including six on the US PGA Tour, Scott has
never really produced his best golf on home soil and remains win-less in Australia
since turning professional in 2000.
But all the signs are there that he might finally break his duck and put his name
alongside some of the greats in the golfing world on the Stonehaven Cup.
Starting his third round at the NSW course on 10-under following rounds of 68 and
66, Scott has picked up four birdies on Saturday to move to 14-under, a two-shot
advantage over Stuart Appleby.
They have separated themselves from the pack, with Nick O'Hern four shots further
back on eight-under and holding down outright third.
James Nitties, Jarrod Lyle and American David Oh are equal fourth on six-under,
while John Daly is three-over for his round and in a tie for 22nd on even-par for
the tournament.
In his opening round, Scott started on the back nine and picked up a bogey on the
par three second hole, his 11th.
Since then, he has gone 35 straight holes without a blemish on his card.
Scott had his worst season to date in the US in 2009, finishing 108th on the
moneylist and slumping to No.54 in the world rankings.
But in the lead-up to this week's Open, Scott declared he wasn't in Sydney just to
make up the numbers and was aiming to win his first national championship.
With 26 holes remaining, that might be about to become a reality.
