Six-nation Negotiations on Korean Nuke Program Have Good Tempo
Tokyo, June 4 (Itar-Tass) -- The six-nation negotiations on the Korean nuclear program have good tempo, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin said in comments on his recent consultations with Japanese counterpart Kenichiro Sasae.
"We think that certain progress has been achieved at the negotiations, and the discussion of the denuclearization of North Korea has good tempo," he said.
"We hope to achieve results. Our hopes are based on the recent contacts between the United States and North Korea." Borodavkin said he had raised the question of a possible peace andsecurity mechanism in Northeast Asia, which could be created within the six-nation process.
"Some time ago we suggested the formation of a peace and securitymechanism in Northeast Asia. Judging by my conversation with the Japanese side, they feel positive about this idea," he said.
"Russia will gradually develop the Northeast Asia peace and security dialog into a regular format. That would enable the sides to exchange information about the military-political situation and the suppression of new threats and challenges and build up confidence," Borodavkin said.
He noted that Russia would soon complete the deliveries of fuel oil to North Korea in line with the action for action program.
There will be no full-scale negotiations between Russian PresidentDmitry Medvedev and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on the sidelines of the G-8 summit in Hokkaido this summer, Borodavkin said.
"As far as we understand, the Russian president and the Japanese prime minister could focus on the most important aspects of the Russian-Japanese relations and certain pressing international issues," he said.
"We have a lot of projects and documents, which are being discussed at negotiations or coordinated on the interstate level. It is hard to say whether they will be ready by the summit but we will work hard and present good results of our cooperation to our leaders."Russia and Japan think that peace treaty negotiations should be calm and balanced, the diplomat noted.
"We discussed the peace treaty process and confirmed our positions," he said. "We think that our dialog should be calm and balanced." "This problem should not impede the development of our mutuallybeneficial relations in politics and economy," Borodavkin said.
He said they had stated "the positive nature of the bilateralrelations." "We have a large set of projects and agreements," Borodavkin said, adding, "We will be able to affirm progress in our relationship by the G-8 summit of this July." - end.
