Two Thai doctors win Prince Mahidol Awards

BANGKOK, Dec 3 (TNA) – Two Thai doctors who promote the use of condoms for HIV prevention and birth control won the Prince Mahidol Award for 2009 in the field of public health while a British professor who has applied economic tools to improve policymaking and practice of healthcare systems was given the award in the field of medicine.

Clinical Professor Teerawat Kulthanan, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Siriraj Hospital, in his capacity as vice president of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, announced the 18th Prince Mahidol Award for 2009. There are 66 nominations from 35 countries.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, president of the foundation, presided over a meeting on last week to make the final decisions on the award winners.

The Prince Mahidol Award 2009 in the field of medicine is given to Prof Anne Mills, Professor of Health Economics and Policy, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.

Prof Mills has developed and applied economic tools to improve policymaking and practice of the healthcare systems.

She also has played a major role in strengthening the capability of developing countries in Africa and Asia, in health economics, health system research and healthcare policy development.

The Prince Mahidol Award 2009 in the field of public health is jointly awarded to Dr Wiwat Rojanapithayakorn, World Health Organization Representative for Mongolia and Mechai Viravaidya, founder and chairman, Population and Community Development Association in Thailand.

Dr Wiwat, former first director of the Prevention and Control of AIDS Center in Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, initiated the “100% Condom Use Programme” which has been recognised worldwide as one the most successful HIV prevention tools.

Mr Mechai, founder and chairman of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) plays a major role in providing family planning education for women in rural areas.

He promoted the use of condoms to prevent pregnancy and his campaigns changed people’s ideas and speach about condoms from an embarrassing, not-to-be-mentioned taboo subject to a commonly used household item.

The Presentation Ceremony of the Prince Mahidol Award 2009 will be held at the Chakri Maha Prasart Throne Hall in late January.

The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under Royal Patronage was established in commemoration of the centenary of the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, on January 1, 1992.

It annually confers two Prince Mahidol Awards upon an individual or an institution, which have demonstrated outstanding contributions to humanity in the field of medicine and public health.

Each award consists of a medal, a certificate and a sum of US$50,000. (TNA)
