'Red Shirt' to rally at Democracy Monument December 10
BANGKOK, Dec 2 (TNA) - Thailand's anti-government 'Red-Shirt' United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) on Wednesday announced its intention to rally in the Thai capital on December 10, vowing to stage a peaceful protest in one location with no marching to other areas.
Key Red Shirt leaders Veera Musikapong, Jatuporn Prompan and Nattawut Saikua jointly told a news conference that Red Shirt supporters will gather on December 10 at the Democracy Monument on Rajdamnoen Avenue starting from noon and end their rally at midnight.
Mr Veera said that the December 10 event is aimed at "opposing the bureaucracy and calling for democracy", reiterating that their gathering this time is not aimed to oust the Abhisit Vejjajiva government.
Experts and academics will be invited to join talks on the country’s situation and amending the constitution on that day, Mr Veera said.
Key UDD leader Nattawut Saikua asserted that the UDD activists will not march to other areas but will light candles to mark His Majesty the King's birthday.
Mr Nattawut added that Red Shirt leaders nationwide will convene on December 9 to discuss the movement’s stance about its planned rally.
Whether the Internal Security Act will be invoked on December 10 is up to the government, he said.
The Cabinet on Tuesday lifted the ISA imposed across the Thai capital from November 28 through December 14 after the Red Shirts postponed their ‘demonstration-to-the-end’ to oust the Abhisit government, earlier set for November 28 through December 2, to after the New Year celebrations following warning from many parties that the protest period is inappropriate as it is close to the king's birthday on December 5.
