Malaysian PM to officially visit Thailand next week
BANGKOK, Dec 2 (TNA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Sri Haji Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak and his wife will make their first official visit to Thailand next week (December 7-9) as guests of the Thai government and to attend the 4th Malaysia-Thailand Annual Consultation (AC).
The annual meeting is aimed at building familiarity and fostering good relations among the two countries’ leaders and ministers, and following up the progress of previous discussions regarding Thai-Malaysian cooperation in various aspects.
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Malaysian counterpart will visit a bridge crossing the Kolok River in the southern Thai province of Narathiwat linking the two countries to witness the signing ceremony changing the bridge's name to ‘Friendship Bridge’ as well as an agreement on the use of the bridge, including its management and maintenance.
Both leaders will also visit a village under His Majesty the King’s sufficiency economy project together and receive an overview of its OTOP (One Tambon One Product) wares. (Tambon is Thai for sub-district).
Malaysia is Thailand’s fourth largest trading partner, with a trading value standing at US$19.6 billion.
Regarding tourism, the number of Malaysian tourists who visited Thailand in 2008 increased by more than 14 per cent to 1.8 million, up from 1.54 million in 2007. A similar upward trend is also shown on the Thai side where the number of tourists who visited Malaysia jumped by 15 per cent from 1.13 million in 2007 to 1.49 million in 2008. (TNA)
