Tehran, Nov 29, IRNA – An exhibition themed ‘Opening to Color’ featuring 113 paintings by the famous contemporary poet and painter Shorab Sepehri will open here in the Museum of Contemporary Arts on Monday.
Announcing this, Director General of the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry’s Office for Visual Arts Mahmoud Shalouei said that Sepehri was a great poet to whom the society is greatly indebted.
Shalouei said that “18 of the paintings are displayed for the first time,” adding that 14 of the works on display belong to Iranian expatriates in the UAE and Britain who loaned them to the museum.
Meanwhile, a one-day seminar on Sohrab’s poetry and literary thoughts will be held on December 1.
Screening a documentary on Sohrab and publishing two volumes of books featuring works on display are among the other peripheral programs of the event.
Meanwhile, the secretary of the seminar on the poet, Esmail Azar, said that different aspects of Sohrab’s poetry will be discussed during the conference to be attended by veteran experts.
He further noted that there is a direct link between his poetry and painting which are interlinked.
The secretary of the exhibition, Yaqoub Emdadian, said that Sohrab’s personal belongings and photos will also be exhibited during the event.
The exhibition will end on January 21.
Sepehri was born in 1928 in Kashan, Isfahan province. After obtaining his diploma, he acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Fine Arts Faculty of Tehran University.
In the first twelve years after his graduation, he worked in several governmental agencies while pursuing his personal interest in poetry and painting. During these years he also traveled on numerous occasions to Europe and Africa.
In 1964 he completely resigned from his governmental position and began focusing his time and energy on poetry and painting. He moved and lived in the US for one year, and subsequently spent about two years living in Paris.
In 1979, he was diagnosed with cancer and for the last time moved to England for treatment. A year later, in 1980, he passed away in Tehran and now rests in his birthplace, Kashan. /end
