Iran backs Paris Pact Initiative

TEHRAN, Nov. 29 (MNA) – The Deputy Director of the Iranian Drug Control Headquarters, Taha Taheri, has said Iran supports Paris Pact Initiative and Rainbow Strategy.

Paris Pact Initiative is a partnership of more than 50 countries and international organizations led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), aiming to counter traffic in and consumption of Afghan opiates. The Rainbow Strategy is a regional response to the threat posed by the supply, trafficking and consumption of Afghan opiates.

Speaking during the 8th meeting of the PPI in Vienna, Taheri said that Iran’s cooperation with Afghanistan and Pakistan in campaigns against narcotics is an indication of the Islamic Republic’s support of PPI and RS.

According to a report faxed to Tehran Times on Sunday, he described the PPI and RS as an important part of the international efforts to prevent drug smuggling from Afghanistan and the transfer of drug materials into Afghanistan.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said Iran spends $600 million annually to run campaigns against drugs along its eastern borders.

Taheri added Iran has taken important measures to prevent money laundering from drug profit.

A cooperation agreement was also signed between Iran and UNODC.

The agreement calls for formulating technical strategies and exchanging information between all counter-drug forces in order to promote capability of fighting against drug-related crimes and psychotropic drugs.
