Cooler temps to help NSW firefighters
A bushfire in the NSW Hunter region may threaten some remote properties, but cooler
temperatures are expected to boost firefighters' efforts across the state.
NSW Rural Fire Service spokeswoman Rebel Talbert said a new fire had broken out near
Killingworth, north of Lake Macquarie, on Saturday.
"That's expected to impact a couple of remote rural properties in the next few
hours," Ms Talbert told AAP on Saturday afternoon.
"But apart from that we're not too concerned about other properties coming under
threat in that area.
Residents were urged to prepare for possible ember attacks and activate their
bushfire survival plans.
"Firefighters are working with residents on the ground and we do have aircraft that
are going to be supporting those fire crews."
Otherwise, there were very few new blazes despite high temperatures.
Ms Talbert said cooler temperatures on Sunday will allow firefighters to focus on
existing fires, including blazes in the Narrabri, Lithgow and Glen Innes areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) website says Narrabri and Glen Innes will experience
temperatures in the low 30s on Sunday, while the forecast maximum temperature for
Lithgow is 22C.
"We still will have some stronger wind in parts of the state but we are expecting
that it will be cooler tomorrow," Ms Talbert said.
"That will really give firefighters the upper hand on many of the fires that we've
still got burning."
The BoM has issued a fire weather warning for Sunday with dry and windy conditions
expected to increase fire danger.
Total fire bans are in place for the far north coast, Greater Hunter, New England,
northern slopes and northwestern areas from midnight on Saturday.
