CONFERENCE ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HELD IN BAKU
Baku, 25 November (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan State Committee on Family, Women and Children`s Affairs and OSCE Office in Baku have co-organized today a conference on domestic violence.
The event participants analyzed and discussed domestic violence topics in Azerbaijan, including a proposed law on the prevention of domestic violence.
Head of the OSCE office in Baku Ali Bilge Cankorel said “ten years ago, the UN General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. We chose this date for this conference to raise awareness about domestic violence matters in Azerbaijan, because although anyone can suffer from domestic violence, the overwhelming majority of its victims are women and children”.
Vice-speaker of Azerbaijan Milli Majlis Bahar Muradova said there is need to adopt in Azerbaijan a law to regulate domestic violence questions.
Chairwoman of the State Committee on Family, Women and Children`s Affairs Hijran Huseynova said thanks to initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev a lot has been done in Azerbaijan to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women.
She underlined Azerbaijan`s First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, MP Mehriban Aliyeva attaches special importance to increasing the role of women in society.
Chairwoman of Milli Majlis Committee on Human Rights Rabiyyat Aslanova said elimination of violence against women was an urgent issue across the world.
She stressed the necessity of adoption of a law on elimination of violence against women, as well.
Human Rights Commissioner of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova said elimination of violence against women will provide opportunities for them to use their capabilities effectively.
Speeches and presentations examining the problem were given by MPs, representatives of the government, civil society and international organizations. The OSCE`s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights provided expert opinion on the proposed bill.
