Red Shirts postpone weekend rally indefinitely
BANGKOK, Nov 25 (TNA) - Thailand's anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) on Wednesday announced the postponement of the group's major rally this weekend indefinitely, after the government invoked a far-reaching security law to maintain order, saying it will convene again to discuss the group's movements in mid-December.
The so-called Red Shirt activists earlier announced that they would stage a major protest in Bangkok to oust the Abhisit Vejjajiva government starting from this Saturday through December 2.
The government on Tuesday resolved to invoke the Internal Security Act (ISA) to maintain law and order from November 28 to December 14 across the capital during the UDD protest as the anti-government group also planned to march to many important spots around the capital.
The government also reasoned that the ISA will help prevent the occurrence of any untoward incident as there would be large crowds during the protest at the UDD’s main rally site which will be used for rehearsals of the annual Trooping of the Colours of the Royal Guard and preparations for activities to mark the birthday of His Majesty .
Following the announcement of the ISA enforcement, fugitive ousted ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra expressed concern over the UDD’s planned protest via video link to his supporters, advising the Red Shirt leaders to postpone the protest as it is an “inappropriate time”.
Key UDD leader Veera Musikapong said on Wednesday after the group's meeting that the UDD decided to postpone its rally indefinitely due to the ISA enforcement, but he said the protest leaders will convene again to discuss its stance and movement in mid-December.
"The announcement of ISA enforcement during the celebrations of the king's birthday is inappropriate and will make foreigners doubtful as well as have negative impact in many aspects," Mr Veera said.
Another UDD leader, Nattawut Saikua, said that “it depends on the conscience of the government whether to lift the ISA or not,” while vowing that there will be a mass rally of the Red Shirts after the king's birthday and
Prime Minister Abhisit will see a million of protesters.
Jatuporn Prompan, UDD leader and also an opposition Puea Thai member of parliament, said he will question the premier at Thursday’s parliamentary session regarding the imposition of the ISA to cover the king's birthday celebrations period.
Mr Jatuporn added that constitutional law also requires the government to report to Parliament over the security measure’s enforcement and its budget . (TNA)
