BAKU HOSTS ROUNDTABLE MEETING ON 20th ANNIVERSARY OF UN CONVENTION ON RIGHTS OF CHILD
Baku, November 20 (AzerTAc). A roundtable devoted to the 20th anniversary of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was held in Baku, at the Ataturk Center on Thursday. The roundtable was organized under the support of the Baku Office of the UN Department of Public Information and Azerbaijan Ombudsman`s Office.
The event attended by the state and public officials, UN representatives and other intergovernmental organizations, as well as NGO representatives, discussed works done in the country to protect the child`s rights and achievements in this direction.
During the roundtable, Azerbaijani Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova spoke about the measures taken to protect children’s rights in Azerbaijan and the activity of the commissioner’s office.
In her turn, Deputy Chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs Sedagat Gahramanova also mentioned to the achievements of the country in field of child affairs and improvement of children’s life.
“President Ilham Aliyev `s declaration of 2009 - The Year of Children, which envisions strengthening children’s welfare and increasing the attention of civil society organizations to children’s problems is of great significance in country`s life,” she added.
Finally, the winners of the competition of journalists’ articles on the theme “Children’s rights for all” and competition of children’s paintings on the theme “Our rights” organized by the Human Rights Commissioner’s office under the motto “Let’s listen to the children, ensure their participation” were awarded.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in the UN General Assembly on November 20, 1989. Azerbaijan joined the Convention in 1992.
