PM to visit Chiang Mai during anti-govt protest in Bangkok
BANGKOK, Nov 18 (TNA) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is due to visit the northern province of Chiang Mai on November 29 when the ‘Red Shirts’, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), plan to rally in Bangkok with the stated intention to topple the government, Satit Wonghnongtaey, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office said Wednesday.
Chiang Mai is the hometown of convicted ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra and he still has strong support there.
The government is not being careless in preparing to maintain order during the UDD demonstration November 29, Mr Satit said, adding that the government is confident that it can control the situation as the conditions and reasons for staging the protest are quite weak.
The government has been trying to create understanding among the people in a number of provinces, he said, so that they don’t oppose the government, but let it carry out its work.
Mr Abhisit will also visit the lower northern provinces of Phitsanulok and Phichit on Saturday and will travel to the central province of Suphan Buri on Sunday to inspect the government programme to guarantee farmers’ income.
A government representative had met with some of the local villagers who plan to register their dissatisfaction with the Abhisit government during the prime minister’s visit. However, some may still continue their plans to do so, but under a legal framework.
In Chiang Mai on November 29, the prime minister meet the Thai Chamber of Commerce in the morning and fly to Prince of Songkhla University’s Hat Yai campus in the afternoon, he said. (TNA)
