Rome, Nov 17, IRNA – The Minister of Agriculture Jihad has stressed on a joint political will for mobilizing international resources as the only way to alleviate global hunger by the year 2025.
Sadeq Khalilian was addressing the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) conference in Rome on Tuesday.
When international leaders convened in the World Food Summit 13 years ago to exchange views on alleviating poverty in the world, the objective of the event was to find ways to reduce the number of those suffering from malnutrition by half by 2015, Khalilian noted.
Unfortunately, till date no significant progress has been achieved, he added, regretting that the number of the hungry population across the world has reached some 1 billion.
In this light, how is it possible now to alleviate hunger from the world by 2025? he questioned.
“Global economic crisis is rooted in a development system and market mechanism which lack solid standards,” he noted.
Khalilian pointed out that the FAO, as an impartial international entity, should play a more crucial role for the future of the food industry and agriculture. And Iran is committed to help the organization materialize its goals, he said.
The FAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to alleviate hunger and serving both developed and developing countries. The FAO is a neutral entity that gathers all nations as equals in forums to negotiate agreements and debate policies.
The FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries as well as those nations in transition to modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all.
