Thailand briefs UAE envoy on Thaksin
BANGKOK, Nov 16 (TNA) - Thailand has briefed the United Arab Emirates (UAE) envoy regarding the status of convicted ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, reportedly staying in Dubai, as Mr Thaksin is still using the UAE as a base to attack Thailand, according to Panich Vikitsreth, an assistant to the Thai minister of foreign affairs.
Mr Thaksin reportedly spends much time in Dubai. While Thailand previously sought the UAE's cooperation in arresting and returning former prime minister Thaksin to Thailand, the two countries have not signed an extradition treaty and no return has been possible.
The briefing follows Minister of Foreign Affairs Kasit Piromya’s letter to the UAE informing that government officially that Mr Thaksin flew from Cambodia to Dubai on Saturday (November 14), he said.
The move came after Cambodia last week turned down a Thai request for the extradition of Mr Thaksin, who had visited Phnom Penh to take up a new role as an economic adviser.
Mr Panich said the ministry had summoned UAE ambassador Mohammed Ali Ahmed Omran Al Shamsi to the ministry to inform him about the Thai government's concern over fugitive former prime minister Thaksin's use of Dubai to launch attacks against the Thai government.
Documents went also presented to prove that Mr Thaksin is in Dubai, including a copy of his full interview with British newspaper The Times on November 9 which stated that the interview was made at Dubai as well as interviews with Mr Thaksin's assistants who confirmed that he returned to Dubai.
Mr Panich said he told the ambassador that Thailand believed that the UAE will cooperate on the arrest warrant procedure to bring Mr Thaksin back to Thailand.
The ambassador responded very warmly to Thailand's information, he said, adding that the ambassador also affirmed that the UAE foreign minister adhered to the principle that it will not allow anyone to use his country as a political base to attack other countries.
The UAE is ready to cooperate with Thailand and he would coordinate with his foreign ministry as soon as possible, he said. (TNA)
