INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN KICKS OFF IN BAKU

Baku, November 16 (AzerTAc). An international conference on “Justice for children: legislation and its application” has started today here bringing together parliamentarians and international and local justice experts.
Co-organized by the Azerbaijan Parliament, United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) and Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation, the conference marks the year of child in Azerbaijan and the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Opening remarks were made by Azeri vice-speaker Bahar Muradova who said the conference would discuss juvenile justice which includes protection of the right of children under 20 and their reintegration into society.
She said “in accordance with the terms of democracy, every state must create necessary conditions to ensure and promote human rights and freedoms and raise healthy youth.”
Muradova praised Azerbaijan`s democratic experience and achievements.
“Women were granted elective franchise in 1919 in Azerbaijan when first democratic republic in the East existed.”
UNICEF Representative in Azerbaijan Mark Hereward underlined the importance of the conference.
He said such gatherings were of crucial significance when children across the world were subjected to physical and psychological abuse and lured into crime.
He praised what the Azerbaijani government has done to prevent “such cases” and ensure rehabilitation of juvenile prisoners after their release.
Azerbaijani Deputy Justice Minister Togrul Musayev and MP Ali Huseynov highlighted justice reforms in Azerbaijan, saying they meet international standards.
The conference will culminate in the adoption of a Baku Declaration.
