IRNA calls for further cooperation among Asian news agencies


The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) of Iran has called on its Asian counterparts to boost intra_continental media cooperation by exchanging news and photos and expert groups as well as holding technical workshops.

The call was made during the 31st Executive Board Meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) which was held in the Iranian capital on Sunday morning.

The meeting was participated by 40 representatives of 18 regional news agencies from different parts of Asia and the Pacific.

Meanwhile, the OANA Editorial-Technical Experts Group (ETEG) simultaneously convened its 25th meeting in Tehran.

The meetings were hosted by Iran’s Mehr News Agency with the theme “A Quest for Global Media Balancing”.

The IRNA delegation presented a detailed country report to the board meeting in which the Iranian news agency stressed that making further regional and multilateral media cooperation would effectively help correcting the present one-sided flow of information worldwide.

It was also stressed that media were playing a vital role in forming public opinion as well as family, social and cultural relationships.

IRNA also reminded the vitality of reforming the present imbalanced flow of reporting by the global media through strengthening the competitive power of the OANA member sates vis-à-vis their Western rivals to help restore peace and respect for national traditions,customs and cultures of other countries worldwide.

IRNA is one of the oldest members of the OANA and as the first Iranian member of the organization served as the president-agency in 1997-2000.
