Mottaki:Iran ready to help ECO achieve its goals
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki conferred on Saturday with Secretary General of Economic Cooperation Organization Yahya Maroufi.
Mottaki thanked the fomer ECO secretary generals and hoped that it will achieve plausible outcomes in the light of Maroufi’s activities.
Referring to the need for a fundamental developments in ECO, he described commerce, transportation and energy as among the main areas of cooperation among the member states.
He also listed promoting trade among the member states, optimizing transportation systems, upgrading ECO’s collaboration with regional and international organizations and participating in the projects to fight drug smuggling as among the main prospects of the organization.
Pointing to Iran’s experience in regional cooperation, Mottaki voiced Iran’s readiness to help the entity achieve its objectives.
Maroufi, for his part, presented a report on the activities of ECO in the fields of trade, transportation, environment, fighting drug smuggling and educational affairs and said that ECO can play a constructive role in solving regional issues.
Since ECO enjoys numerous capacities, undertaking fundamental works are in the interest of all regional countries.
He hailed Iran’s active role in ECO and its constructive opinions regarding the regional and international issues.
Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey for the purpose of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states.
The ECO region is full of bright trading prospects. Despite its young age, ECO has developed into a thriving regional organization. Its international stature is growing.
Over the past 12 years the member states have been collaborating to accelerate the pace of regional development through their common endeavors. Besides shared cultural and historic affinities, they have been able to use the existing infrastructural and business links to further fortify their resolve to transfer their hopes and aspirations into a tangible reality. ECO has embarked on several projects in priority sectors of its cooperation including energy, trade, transportation, agriculture and drug control.
