PM Abhisit meets Peruvian leader in bilateral talks
SINGAPORE, Nov 13 (TNA) – Arriving in Singapore for the 17th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting,Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva went into action immediately by holding productive bilateral talks with Peru’s leader, affirming stronger trade relations with the Andean country.
In Singapore at 4 pm (5pm in Bangkok), the Thai premier began his mission by by meeting Peruvian President Alan Garcia and witnessing a signing ceremony for protocols of the Thai-Peruvian Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
The two leaders discussed the implications of cross-Pacific trade and commerce represented by the FTA signed earlier by Peru and Thailand.
Thailand is the seventh country to sign an FTA with Peru, after the United States, Mexico, Canada, the European Union (EU), Singapore and China.
The Thai-Peruvian FTA brought about tariff deductions and revocations of 5,962 items or 70.8 per cent of all traded goods between the two countries.
Thailand has benefited from importing raw materials from Peru for export production.
The prime minister plans to meet with Thai footballers now in Singapore for the Asian Cup qualifying round on Saturday.
As Group 5’s guest of honour, he will later attend the ‘Dine Around Singapore’ activity or APEC CEO’s Summit Dinner with leading Singaporean businessmen who are members of Young Presidents’ Organisation at Dalvey House.
