Germany, US stress diplomacy in Iran nuclear row
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton here Monday stressed the need for diplomatic settlement of the impasse over Iran's nuclear program.
Speaking at a joint press briefing at the German foreign ministry, Westerwelle said, "We want the dialogue and we also want a diplomatic solution."
The minister's remarks were echoed by Clinton who urged Iran to accept the western nuclear proposal.
"This offer represents an opportunity for Iran to both meet its medical and humanitarian needs at the Tehran research reactor and to begin restore international confidence in their nuclear program," the US official said.
Pointing out that Iran had yet to formally reply to the western offer, she said it was "premature to speculate" on the next steps.
Clinton emphasized Tehran was "well aware that this is a two-track approach."
She called on Iran "to live up to its international obligations and comply fully with UN Security Council resolutions and IAEA directives on its nuclear program."
