Woods shares lead in Shanghai
Tiger Woods finished his second round with a wet sail to vault into a share of the
halfway lead at the $US7 million ($A7.68 million) HSBC Champions tournament on
Friday.
Melbourne-bound Woods gathered five birdies in the final 10 holes to shoot a second
consecutive five-under-par 67 on another ideal day for low scoring at Sheshan.
He joined first round pacesetter Nick Watney (70) at 10-under 134, one stroke ahead
of fellow Americans Phil Mickelson and Ryan Moore and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros.
There were seven Americans in the top nine in Asia's first World Golf Championships
event.
Rod Pampling was the best-placed Australian, seven strokes behind in a tie for 23rd.
"When I missed a green, I didn't get up-and-down," Pampling said after a
disappointing 72.
"That hurt me today. I didn't make the up-and-downs I made yesterday.
"Other than that it was fine. I made enough birdies, so I'll just try and keep the
bogeys out tomorrow and see if I can find my compass again."
Compatriot Robert Allenby (69) was another stroke adrift after failing to build on a
brilliant start.
Allenby birdied the first four holes but his charge screeched to a halt after that
as he played the rest of the round in one-over, including a double bogey at the
par-four 13th where he pushed his second shot from a bunker into a water hazard
right of the green.
"That double didn't go down too well," he said.
"I ended up hitting eight-iron, which I knew was too much club, and the rest is
history. I cracked the shits the last five holes."
Scott Strange at one-under 143 was the only other Australian in red figures, with
Geoff Ogilvy and Greg Chalmers two-over and Nathan Green last at 12-over.
