Spanish and Vietnamese actors on Nov. 5

Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi (VNA) – Spanish and Vietnamese actors on Nov. 5 performed together
in the play Take My Eyes at the Hanoi Opera House.

The play was performed by Spanish actress Gabriela Flores and Vietnam Drama Theatre
actors including Mai Huong, Lam Tung, Minh Hieu and Thu Theu. The stage was designed
by painter Paco Azorin.

Director Carme Portaceli transformed the piece from director Iciar Bollain’s film,
and she also wrote the script, together with Alicia Luna. The film was released for
the first time in Spain in 2003, and saw both audience and critical success. The
film won seven Spanish Goya awards, including best film and best direction, and was
also selected in the International Film festival of Donostia-San Sebastian, where it
won awards for best actress and actor.

Take My Eyes tells the story of a couple’s rocky relationship, and of domestic
violence between them. It is a love story, a fearfull story and a story of control
and power. It tells us about the relationship between Pilar and Antonio, but also
about the people around them: a mother that doesn’t want to see the truth, a
sister that tries to help but doesn’t know how, the friends that support her and a
society that pretends to be blind to the problems.

With its aims to raise awareness of the problem of domestic violence, the piece
suggests alternatives for preventing and exceeding gender inequality through
self-consciousness and women’s empowerment.

The director considered the project a challenge that gave her a chance to bring to a
different country and different culture “such an important issue all over the
world”.

It will be a unique staging, open to everybody, as there will be subtitles in
Vietnamese, Spanish and English. It will be an opportunity to see the things that
have been hidden away from sight, to see these kept secrets.

The play will be performed on Nov. 8 and 9.

The Spanish Ministry of Culture, the International Scenic Factory (Factoria Escenica
International), the Spanish Institute for Stage, Arts and Music, the Spanish Embassy
in Vietnam , the Dramatic National Theatre of Vietnam and the Vietnamese Ministry
of Culture, Sports and Tourism will cooperate to hold the performances.-Enditem
