Baku, November 4 (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has hailed the start of construction of a waste-to-energy plant that would process municipal solid waste as “a landmark event” in the country`s life.
The President spoke to constructors at a groundbreaking ceremony of the solid waste incineration and energy recovery facility to be built by French company CNIM.
The plant capacity is 500,000 t / per year. The construction site of 20 hectares is located in the area of the Balakhany landfill. The facility will generate 231,500 megawatt of electricity from incineration of household waste.

“Additional jobs will be created once the facility is commissioned,” he added.

“The French company has a great experience of building similar plants in a wide range of countries, especially in the developed ones. I am sure the plant will be constructed in time and to state-of-the-art standards.”
The President also said environment-related issues are among key priorities for the Azerbaijani government.
“Three years ago we adopted a wide environmental program, which is being successfully implemented. We declared next year as the year of the environment which will see implementation of a series of events.
