PRESIDENT: AZERI CHESS PLAYERS` ACHIEVEMENTS PROVE HIGH LEVEL OF SPORT AND INTELLECTUAL POTENTIAL OF AZERBAIJAN
Baku, 3 November (AzerTAc). “Azerbaijani chess players have become European champions. This is a great and historic win. Achievements of our chess players prove high level of sport and intellectual potential of Azerbaijan,” said President Ilham Aliyev.
Talking to members of Azerbaijan men`s national chess team who recently became European champions in Serbia, the President said “we have very talented chess players who produce good results at different international tournaments and are ranked among leaders in FIDE ranking list.”
“For the first time our chess players claimed European title, bringing a lot of joy and happiness to the whole Azerbaijani people.”
“There have always been strong traditions of chess in Azerbaijan. In the 1970s national leader Heydar Aliyev ordered construction of chess schools across the country, which gave tremendous impulse to developing this kind of sport in Azerbaijan,” said the President.
