Police arrest third suspect in stock rumour case
BANGKOK, Nov 3 (TNA) – Thai authorities have arrested a third suspect in relation to the spread of rumours which are credited with tumbled Thai stock market last month.
Pol Maj-Gen Kriengsak Arunsrisophon, commander of the Economic and Cyber Crime Division, said that the suspect is a Thai man but he denied elaborating further details. The authorities arrested the man in Chonburi and were questioning him.
He was accused of feeding false information through the computer system that may cause damage to the security of the nation or cause panic among the public. If convicted, those who are arrested face five year prison terms and/or maximum fines of Bt100,000.
Police on Sunday arrested two suspects, Theeranun Wiphuchanun and Katha Pajariyapong, in connection with spreading a rumour on the health of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Both were released on bail.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index dropped 7.2 per cent during October 14 and 15 trading sessions as rumours swirled in the bourse over the 81-year-old king's health.
His Majesty the King on Monday appeared in public for the second time in less than two weeks after being hospitalised for more than a month for a lung inflammation treatment, marking the occasion by celebrating a traditional observance of the Loy Krathong festival with members of the royal family.
