Fire breaks out on leaking Sea oil rig
A fire has started on the oil rig that has been leaking oil into the Timor Sea for
10 weeks.
PTTEP Australasia, the company responsible for the leak, released a statement on
Sunday, saying the West Atlas rig and Montara well head platform were on fire.
No one on board the rig is reported to be injured and all non-essential workers were
being evacuated.
Oil has been seeping from the oil well, more than 200 kilometres off Western
Australia's Kimberley coastline, since August 21.
PTTEP said the leaking well was intercepted at 9.30am (WST) on Sunday and work had
started to pump heavy mud into the hole and stop the flow when the fire broke out on
the H1 well.
No further details were immediately available.
