Quake helpers heading back home
Australian personnel sent to help out in the earthquake-devastated region of Padang
in Indonesia are returning home after completing their work.
The last elements of the defence task force deployed following the September 30
earthquake will depart Indonesia on November 2, after a month on the ground.
Their departure follows the closure of the Australian Army primary health care
facility and its official handover to local health authorities, the defence
department said on Friday.
The task force has also completed its reconstruction projects.
The Australians produced and distributed 1.3 million litres of water using a mobile
water purification plant, treated 1300 patients and assessed at least 63 buildings
for structural integrity.
More than 500 tonnes of humanitarian aid was flown into the region, aided by the
Aussies.
Defence force chief Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said Australia and Indonesia had
strengthened their friendship by working closely together in the aftermath of the
earthquake, which killed at least 1,100 people.
