Police seeking warrants for four over king's health rumour
BANGKOK, Oct 29 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday said the police are gathering evidence to seek arrest warrants for four suspects over their role in spreading a rumour on the health of the Thai monarch, a rumour which sent the Thai stock market tumbling earlier this month.
The authorities have information to proceed with the case, but will immediately take legal action against those engaged in releasing the rumour when they have enough evidence, the prime minister said without giving details about the suspects.
"I received an initial report that there are four people but I have no details regarding who they are,” said the prime minister. “I told the (police) officers to proceed with (pressing) the charges.”
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has been in hospital since last month for treatment of a lung infection.
He made his first public appearance last week and his condition has recovered well according to the statements of the Royal Household Bureau.
The rumours over the King’s health began October 14 and the stock index tumbled 2.04 per cent, while the following day, it was down 5.3 per cent as a result of massive sell orders from foreign investors in a panic fuelled by rumours.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) composite index lost 13.85 points to close on Thursday at 690.10, and the blue-chip SET-50 index dropped 11.39 points to 486.97. Analysts attributed the 1.97 per cent drop to profit taking as investors waited for the release of US growth Thursday night.
Thai shares fell in line with other regional bourses, which were affected by US stocks. (TNA)
