AZERBAIJAN ‘ONE OF FIRST COUNTRIES’ TO JOIN OPTIONAL PROTOCOL TO INTERNATIONAL COVENANT FOR ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS
Baku, October 28 (AzerTAc). The NGO Coalition for an Optional Protocol to the International Covenant for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights sent a letter to Azerbaijan`s Foreign Ministry.
The Coalition, in the letter, praises the fact that Azerbaijan is one of the first countries to join the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and supports its initiatives to ratify the document soon.
On behalf of Azerbaijan, the document was signed by Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov on the sidelines of the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly held on September 25 current year.
The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, and Azerbaijan joined it on August 13, 1992.
The Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights is an international treaty establishing complaint and inquiry mechanisms for the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. It was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 2008, and opened for signature on 24 September 2009. Currently the Protocol has 30 signatories and no parties. It will enter into force when ratified by 10 parties.
