Keep bank details in Australia: MPs

Draft laws to prevent people's bank details being sent overseas have been tabled in
the Senate.
Family First Senator Steve Fielding said when a customer talked to a bank employee
in a call centre overseas, their personal information was "booted offshore" as well.

Australians did not want this, he said.
"Once that personal information is taken overseas, God only knows what could happen
to it," Senator Fielding said in a speech tabled in the Senate on Monday.
He said the bill would force companies to get the written permission of customers
before sending their personal details overseas.
A survey released earlier on Monday revealed that more than 90 per cent of
Australians would prefer their bank did not send personal information overseas for
processing.
"Banks shouldn't be allowed to try and save a few bucks by jeopardising the privacy
of millions of Australians," Senator Xenophon said in a statement.
The survey, commissioned by Senator Xenophon and the Finance Sector Union, found 91
per cent of respondents would choose a bank that did not send their personal
information overseas for processing.
Eight out of 10 respondents said the banks should seek the customer's written
permission.
"People have a right to know whether their personal details, their banking details,
their passport details, their pin numbers are going overseas," Senator Xenophon
later told reporters.
