Full rail services resume Thursday: Transport Minister

BANGKOK, Oct 21 (TNA) - State Railways of Thailand (SRT) train services, in particular its southern routes, will be fully operational on Thursday after being suspended much of a week due to a work stoppage, Transport Minister Sopon Zarum said after meeting with officials concerned.

Mr Sopon on Wednesday met with railway-related agencies to solve the problem of train service suspension since last Friday due to the absence of drivers and mechanics.

After the meeting, the transport minister said confidently that the SRT will operate its services normally on all routes from Thursday.

He added that the state-run railway will provide additional trains for the upcoming three-day public holiday this weekend.

Regarding four locomotives claimed defective by local workers, Mr Sopon said that officials would move all four locomotives from Hat Yai station to SRT’s central switchyards in Bangkok to provide service Thursday.

In another development, the transport ministry and the SRT cooperated with military and police units to tighten security at railway stations, particularly at the southern routes, for passenger’s safety.

Meanwhile, military personnel are on duty at stations in the three southernmost provinces, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat.

However, some southern routes resumed service Wednesday morning--including the first Bangkok-Yala train, which arrived in Hat Yai after a five-day suspension. (TNA)
