Cabinet OKs restructuring agency to tackle southern violence
PHETCHABURI, Oct 20 (TNA) – The Thai cabinet on Tuesday approved a bill to restructure the Southern Border Province Administration Center (SBPAC) to be directed by the prime minister, Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senniam said.
The decision was made as violence continues unabated with Monday's bombing at a Yala province fresh market injuring 25 people, including military personnel.
Speaking after the cabinet meeting, held at Hua Hin’s Dusit Thani Hotel, Mr Thaworn said that under the terms of the bill, the prime minister will direct the centre himsef and that a working committee comprised of cabinet members supervising the implementation of policy in the southern border region.
The committee is authorised to approve an action plan and to evaluate the performance of the SBPAC.
The restructuring will boost unity in terms of strategy and policy implementation, Mr Thaworn said. The newly-structured body will work in parallel with the Internal Security Operation Centre (ISOC) which oversees security affairs in the region.
The prime minister is empowered to appoint a deputy director and secretary-general of the SBPAC.
The secretary-general will be an official of the Interior Ministry for effective coordination with governors and district chiefs in five southern border provinces, said Mr Thaworn.
The bill doesn’t change the law’s content significantly, so the cabinet agreed the bill would be forwarded to this parliamentary session. (TNA)
