AZERBAIJAN TO CONSIDER LEGISLATION ON MILITARY PARTICIPATION IN PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS

Baku, October 16 (AzerTAc). The Azerbaijani parliament will discuss a new legislation regulating the participation of the country`s military in peacekeeping operations.
The legislation has been considered at the parliament`s committee on security and defense and will be submitted to the parliament for approval.
Ziyafat Asgarov, the committee`s chairman, said the law would lay legal foundations for “our military to participate in peacekeeping operations to prevent local and regional conflicts”.
Siyavush Novruzov, a member of the committee, said: “Azerbaijani soldiers and officers have so far been involved in peacekeeping operations only on the basis of bilateral agreements.”
“The new legislation will set the status and functions of the Azeri military to be involved in such operations,” added Novruzov.
The legislation fully authorizes the parliament to send and call back the country`s military contingent to be involved in peacekeeping operations.
It also proposes granting war veteran status to soldiers and officers who would be part of the peacekeeping force.
