ASEAN secretary general: Thai security status won't impact ASEAN meeting

BANGKOK, Oct 14 (TNA) – Thailand’s enforcement of its Internal Security Act (ISA) during the upcoming meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the resorts of Cha-am and Hua Hin will not have any negative impact on the event, the top ASEAN official said Wednesday.

ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said ASEAN members, understanding Thailand's obligation to maintain order, did not object to the security measures being imposed in Hua Hin and in Bangkok’s Dusit district. The meeting is scheduled for October 23 to 25.

No one wants to see a recurrence of the Pattaya violence for it would tarnish Thailand's image," said Dr Surin. "The Thai government has to ensure the meeting goes smoothly without any disruption."

The anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) stormed the Pattaya ASEAN summit meeting venue last April 11, forcing its cancellation.

The Thai government decided to enforce the ISA in Hua Hin and nearby Cha-am district beginning on Monday this week through October 27 and in the capital from Thursday October 15 to 25 to prevent any untoward incident.

Dr Surin said Thailand has given assurances that preparations for the 15th ASEAN summit in Hua Hin were well underway.

The most important agenda in the meeting will be an announcement establishing an ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission on Human Rights, said the secretary-general, adding that global warming, food security and alternative energy will also be discussed.

The group also planned to meet with China on intellectual property protection as China has extensive investment in ASEAN countries while the standard of goods should be set to ensure safety and product quality. (TNA)
