Two diggers wounded in Afghanistan

An Australian soldier has been wounded in Afghanistan, the second this month.
The defence department said Australian troops and members of the Afghan National
Security Forces were conducting operations in southern Afghanistan on Saturday when
they were engaged by "violent extremists".
Chief of Joint Operations Mark Evans confirmed that an Australian soldier was
wounded during a battle with the Taliban but escaped with non-life threatening
injuries.
"The wounded soldier was given immediate first aid by his colleagues and then
evacuated by helicopter to an (International Security Assistance Force) medical
facility at Tarin Kowt," he said on Sunday.
The soldier was in a stable condition and his family had been contacted, Lieutenant
General Evans said.
"Medical staff in Tarin Kowt will monitor this soldier over the coming days to make
an assessment on his ability to return to duty."
Earlier this month, another digger suffered minor wounds after being involved in an
explosion east of Tarin Kowt, the capital of Afghanistan's Oruzgan province
