Firefighters protect several Qld homes
Firefighters have saved several houses from blazes burning throughout Queensland as
they work into the night to protect more homes.
Firefighters were on Friday night fighting six major fires burning across the state,
including one at Nankin, southeast of Rockhampton, threatening homes.
The blaze began at 4pm (AEST) and a water-bombing helicopter has been called in to
help in the fight.
Earlier, 14 fire crews were called to two grass fires at Black River, north of
Townsville, that began within four hours of each other.
A water-bombing aircraft was called in as backburning and a grader were used to
establish fire breaks.
Several homes in the Hervey Range Road areas were protected by fire crews and no
homes were at threat on Friday night.
Meanwhile, four fire crews took on a bush fire at Flying Fox, near Canungra, and
protected a caravan and shed.
Homes were no longer under threat from the fire that has burned around two hectares.
A grass fire at Dulong, southeast of Mapleton that began at midday (AEST) was
burning under control in inaccessible areas but backburning has been conducted
around several homes as a precaution.
At Bouldercombe, a grass fire that began several days ago and threatened several
properties on Thursday continues to burn.
And firefighters continue to fight a fire burning since Wednesday near Booloumba
Creek Road at Cambroon, west of the Sunshine Coast.
On Thursday, firefighters successfully protected several homes from the blaze, now
burning within containment lines and not threatening homes.
Fire bans remain in place across most of the state until midnight next Monday,
October 12.
