Swan tips hat to Costello
Treasurer Wayne Swan has tipped his hat to his "sparring partner" and predecessor
Peter Costello for his commitment to serving Australia.
And he's indicated a man of his talent might one day be asked to serve in a
diplomatic position.
Mr Swan paid tribute to Mr Costello for his contribution while holding "one of the
most difficult jobs in the parliament".
"We haven't always agreed and we've been sparring partners over the years but I
think there is no doubting Peter's commitment to the country," Mr Swan told
reporters on Wednesday.
Asked whether Mr Costello, who is set to hand in his resignation on October 19,
could hope to expect an overseas posting, Mr Swan said: "There certainly has been no
offers from government.
"But I think the prime minister has made it very clear that where there are talents
and distinguished Australians and they are available, we are certainly interested in
using them."
An appointment could potentially follow in the footsteps of former opposition leader
Brendan Nelson, who got the nod from the government to be appointed Australia's
ambassador to Europe last month.
