Poneman U.S. DEPUTY SECRETARY OF ENERGY BRIEFS JOURNALISTS IN BAKU
Baku, October 6 (AzerTAc). As part of his visit to Azerbaijan, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman held Monday a press-conference.
Poneman said the United States and Azerbaijan “have a long and productive history of cooperation in the energy sector and we look forward to the continuation of this mutually beneficial relationship”.
He noted “as a key player in the effort to diversify energy supplies, Azerbaijan has improved both its own energy security and that of our friends and allies”.
According to him, diversifying its energy resources and markets will bring Azerbaijan a range of opportunities to continue its economic growth and development. He added Azerbaijan`s tremendous oil and natural gas reserves give it a crucial role in ensuring global energy security.
Touching upon the 15th anniversary of signing of the “Contract of the Century”, Poneman said this agreement resulted from years of difficult negotiations. “Its realization and the subsequent completion of the BTC pipeline have brought unprecedented growth and prosperity to Azerbaijan”, he added.
Poneman underlined Azerbaijan continues to demonstrate its leadership in working with neighboring countries to build the infrastructure necessary to access new markets.
Poneman also noted “greater energy security will also come from increasing energy efficiency and expanding the use of renewable energy resources in the country” adding “there is tremendous potential to capture energy from wind, water and the sun”.
“Azerbaijan`s decision to create a State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources shows its commitment to developing alternative energy sources and we look forward to working together to expand clean energy`s role in both of our futures”, he said.
