Human vaccine trials delayed to November

BANGKOK, Oct 4 (TNA) – Thailand’s human vaccine trials for the prevention of Influenza Type A (H1N1) have been delayed, once again, now to early November, with large-scale vaccine production expected to start in January, according to Dr Vichai Chokewiwat, chairman of the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO).

The delay has resulted from changes in the virus volume in the vaccine which will be used as stimulant for immunisation in the human body, Dr Vichai said.

He said the changes of virus probably stemmed from storing the virus at an inappropriate temperature.

Discussions were held with senior officials of the UN World Health Organisation (WHO), Russia and an advisory vaccine production team and it was agreed that the trials would be delayed, Dr Vichai said, stating that the vaccine components will be stored at suitable temperatures.

Human vaccine trials for the influenza, to be carried out for the first time in Thailand, had been scheduled earlier, then pushed back to October 5, and now again, as concerned officials await results of immune stimulation tests on chicken cells.

Earlier tests on rat and rabbit cells indicated that the vaccine was suitable at its stage of development, but further tests were required prior to human use. (TNA)
