Thailand to dispatch food, medical supplies to storm-hit Philippines

BANGKOK, Oct 2 (TNA) - Thailand is set to send food and medical supplies to help storm-hit victims of flood in the Philippines, a senior Thai foreign affairs official said on Friday.

Vimol Kidchob, director-general of the Department of Information, said that rice, dry foodstuffs, relief and medical supplies valued at five million baht (US$149,253) will be sent to the devastated country, while the government is also considering to dispatch medical team to there, but still awaiting a reply from the Philippines regarding the types of specialists they need.

At least 293 people were killed and nearly two million people affected in the country's worst flooding in more than 40 years from tropical storm Ketsana which hit the nation's capital Manila last Saturday. More than 370,000 others were forced to seek shelter in evacuation camps.

The Philippines' government has called for international help while President Gloria Arroyo on Friday placed the country under a "state of calamity."

President Arroyo also ordered evacuations of those living in towns in the direct path of another powerful typhoon Parma which was expected to hit the country Saturday morning and threatened to unleash more carnage following deadly floods from Ketsana. (TNA)
