PM Rudd offers condolences to Samoa

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has offered his condolences to Samoa - part of what he
called the Pacific family - following the deadly tsunami that struck the tiny
nation.
"We've been disturbed today to hear about this appalling tsunami which has hit
Samoa," Mr Rudd told reporters on Wednesday.
Mr Rudd has spoken to the acting Samoan prime minister, as well as the Australian
high commissioner about the disaster.
"The Australian government has indicated to our friends in Samoa that we stand ready
to provide all forms of practical assistance to them in dealing with the aftermath
of this natural disaster," he said.
"We see our friends in Samoa as part of our Pacific family and, therefore, when
natural disaster strikes, Australia has always stood ready ... to assist them in
times of difficulty and need."
Australia has a number of military assets on standby ready to provide help.
"We are awaiting final confirmation on what they need," Mr Rudd said.
"Australia already has two RAAF Hercules aircraft on stand-by at Richmond ready to go."
