Hatoyama to help in Tokyo's bid for 2016 Olympics at IOC meeting+
TOKYO, Sept. 28 Kyodo -
Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama will help rally support for Tokyo's bid to host
the 2016 Summer Olympics at Friday's International Olympic Committee general
meeting in Copenhagen, the government said Monday.
''If there's a role I should play as prime minister as Japan tries its best at
hosting Tokyo Olympics, I want to do my best,'' Hatoyama told reporters in
Tokyo.
In the Danish capital, Hatoyama aims to make his appeal from an environmental
point of view in pushing for Tokyo to host the Olympics at the IOC meeting,
where the host city will be decided, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano
said at a press conference earlier in the day.
''We've judged it would be a good opportunity to make an appeal for the
importance of the global environment, given that Tokyo has presented its
original concept to reduce the burden on the environment as much as possible,''
he said.
Tokyo is vying against Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid.
Hatoyama will likely leave Japan on Thursday and will leave the Danish capital
as soon as his schedule at the meeting ends, Hirano said.
Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara and other officials of the Tokyo 2016 bid
committee have already arrived in Copenhagen as they rally for support before
the vote.
Ishihara welcomed Hatoyama's participation in the meeting, saying it will
strongly help Tokyo's bid.
