Tennis: Venus Williams says she has no further plans besides tennis
TOKYO, Sept. 27 Kyodo -
Venus Williams is so focused on winning matches that she cannot picture her
life after tennis just yet.
Belgian former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters gave birth to a daughter in February
2008 and came out of retirement to win the U.S. Open earlier this month.
Asked if she thinks about getting married, having a child and then coming out
of retirement as Clijsters did, Williams, speaking at a round-table interview
at the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Sunday, said ''No. How do you say 'no' in
Japanese?''
The winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles does not care much about who is
on the other side of the court. She just does her best no matter who returns to
competitive tennis, Clijsters or Justine Henin, who recently announced her
comeback.
On the eve of her 39th birthday, Kimiko Date Krumm won her first WTA title
since coming out of retirement in the spring last year at the Korea Open on
Sunday.
''I hope people who come back enjoy tennis. I just focus a lot on my game,''
Williams said. ''When I play people, I just see what they're doing and I just
react. I just play the best shot that I can. I just play the ball more than
anything.''
Williams is seeded second to Dinara Safina in the $2 million event at Ariake
Tennis Forest Park. Her younger sister Serena has pulled out.
On Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Olympics, Venus said, ''Serena and I talk
about it. We say, 'We should play doubles in 2016.' I'm definitely interested
in seeing what happens.''
The International Olympic Committee will announce the host city in its general
assembly meeting in Copenhagen on Friday. Chicago is running against Tokyo,
Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.
