ONJUKU, Japan, Sept. 26 Kyodo - Crown Prince Naruhito attended a ceremony in Onjuku, Chiba Prefecture, on Saturday to commemorate the 400th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Mexico, which started when the ancestors of Onjuku residents rescued survivors of a shipwreck
The crown prince, who has visited Mexico three times, said in his speech, ''I
expect that the mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Mexico
will further deepen.'' He serves as the honorary president for the 400th
anniversary of friendship exchange on the Japanese side.
On Sept. 30, 1609, the San Francisco, a Spanish galleon traveling from the
Philippines to New Spain, the name of the Spanish colony that later gained
independence as Mexico, was shipwrecked off the coast of what is now Onjuku.
The Philippines was also ruled by Spain at the time.
Local fishermen rescued 317 people from the vessel that carried 373 passengers,
according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
