Man had heroin in shoes and body: police

A man has flown into Sydney with 1.8kg of heroin inside his body and hidden in his
shoes.
Police allege the failed smuggling attempt occurred on Sunday when the 42-year-old
Australian arrived at Sydney Airport on a flight from Vietnam.
"During a baggage examination officers became suspicious that the man may have been
concealing drugs internally and inside his shoes," Australian Customs said in a
statement.
"He was subsequently referred to the Australian Federal Police and taken for a
medical examination."
The man, charged with importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug,
faced Sydney's Central Local Court on Thursday.
"It was alleged in court that the man was concealing approximately 500 grams of
heroin inside his shoes and a further 1.3 kilograms of heroin inside his body," the
statement said.
The man is next due in court on November 4.
