Pyne chides Gillard over Magill centre
Opposition frontbencher Christopher Pyne has accused Deputy Prime Minister Julia
Gillard of being "all foam and no beer" for refusing to discuss a troubled youth
detention centre at a key ministerial meeting in Adelaide.
The issue of Adelaide's notorious Magill juvenile detention centre was raised at the
inaugural meeting of social inclusion ministers on Friday, Mr Pyne said.
Magill has been described as an overcrowded hellhole that should be closed because
of the appalling conditions in which young offenders were held.
When the issue of Magill was raised by South Australia's social inclusion
commissioner David Cappo, Ms Gillard said Magill was not her responsibility and laid
the blame on the South Australian government, Mr Pyne said.
At the very least there should have been a discussion, he said.
"Typically the federal government squibbed the only really important issue they had
to deal with in South Australia which is the deplorable state of the Magill Youth
Training Centre," he said.
"What we are seeing with Julia Gillard yet again is that she is all foam and no beer.
"If there is anything that social inclusion ministers should be dealing with it is
the incarceration of children in deplorable conditions."
